Thanks for your comments, Lynn. Through this website I've collected email from former Kittannians from across the United States (click comments.html), and you've echoed many of their comments.

I happenened to be in the right place at the right time to decide on "which" southerly route to take from Charlotte, N.C. area to California when they had the ice and snow storms Dec 23rd and 24th last year.

I-40 was out because of Asheville road conditions (closed for a while), opted for I-75 to Atlanta, I-20 from Atlanta to Dallas, Tx, and dropped even further south to I-10 after that. Lots of crunched cars from Mississippi to 40 miles west of Dallas.

You Northerners and others who know how to drive on ice and snow, take pride!!!! Southerners just don't understand until they've done a few 360's or taken bark off a tree.

Note for Drivers' Ed teachers to pass along: While going through Dallas 12/24/98, I saw no less than five flipped vehicles (four of them already on tow trucks) just on I-20 within city limits. My suspicion is that they got turned sideways going across an icy overpass, then flipped when the tires hit bone dry pavement at the opposite end.

And for Science Teachers: Whether rotation was clockwise or counterclockwise probably wouldn't matter, nor whether it was a 90 degree spin or 270. Someone who wanted to could probably figure out the details from the skid marks on the roof. :)
