: : : I moved my response to this statement into a new post so it wasn't down so far on the board. But in regards to the person who said
: : : "Do they do it because they love the challenge and want to make life better for the kids or are they there because it is the best job they can get for the ability they have?"
: : : I have to comment. I live in WI, work for the county in the WIC program, which is in the same building as our county's Social Services (the equivalent of your CYS). I have talked to these social workers and the stories they have to tell would curl your hair. The homes they go into, the irresponsible abusive parents, the filth, the idiocy, are so bad that I can't usually finish a conversation with them. I do not believe for 1 second that people take a job as a social worker simply b/c they can't get a better job somewhere else. Social workers do things that none of us could do: go into those houses covered in filth & talk to the parents who abuse their children & at times remove those children from homes while the child screams b/c they don't understand whats going on is for their own good. I had one worker tell me she had to carry flea collars in her car that she would then wear around her ankles when she went into one house. Another told me of how she tried to talk to a mother while the mother sat eating cereal while roaches crawled on the table. Not to mention the sh*t these children are going thru, and social workers have to deal with the parents who abuse & neglect their kids, and they have to deal with them in a civil manner according to all the laws.
: : : It takes a special person to be able to do that. And in this day & age, it is so sad to realize that Social Workers are overworked - which means crimes against kids are up, less people are taking decent care of the kids, etc. Rather than shout & scream at the social workers, how about lets figure out a way to help these parents before things get out of control. Stop yelling about the gov't aid program & try to really figure out a way to solve the problems, rather than covering them up with bandaids & condemning the few people (social workers) who are willing to do all they "legally" can.
: : : And while I too think it is a crying shame that the poor little girl is dead, realize that hundreds if not thousands more children are being phsyically, verbally, and sexually abused every single day in this country. We can't do much now for the girl who died, but we can try to figure out how to help the children currently suffering today. However its easier to turn off your tv & ignore the issue & go about your life, and only open your eyes when a child is dead. Gee, social workers can't do that, they live & breathe it every single day.

: : I wish we could figure out how to help the children of today, unfortunately this has been going on for many years and will continue, there is no one clear answer nor will there ever be.I believe social workers are like any others, some are very dedicated and others are there for a pay check.I imagine there are laws and regulations that need redoing but this cancer will never be killed.I am sure there are fleas and roaches , we don't live in a perfect society, these people have to be given credit for the job they do but there is only so much they can do, some kids will always slip through the cracks. There are always some who will say we have to do a better job but can give no concrete direction on how to do it.Face it we don't live in a perfect society.

: seems to me that if you are a social service worker going to a house with a possibly abusive situation on your hands, you would at the least have a picture of the child you were going to see!! how do they explain seeing a healthy child when she was obviously being starved to death at the time.
: i think we should question the competncy of the officials invlolved when such an obvioyus error occured.
: too many times i have seen parents told to go to special classes designed to help them with their problems and they just don't go. no follow up to this. the child is back in the home and it is one less case to follow. and when the abuse reoccours everyone is surprised!!
: not sure of the solutions to all these problems. maybe the first place to look would be the wages paid to these folks. do we really put our money where our mouth is. or maybe yearly public reviews of their jobs, so we have more input into what they do??
I am sure the state and union is going to agree to public input concerning the way the job is being done.Is the public qualified to evealuate them- No! Your taxes would have to increase for them to get an increase. They always say , the larger the wage the less work being done. Maybe these people are overwhelmed, maybe their superiors provide little support, many questions, few answers.
