Mom & Pop stores are a thing of the past and you have places like Wal-Mart to thank for that. The country is turning into "service industry" company and now those jobs are fleeing to India.
Eventually something will be done, but I think we will have to hit rock bottom first. I think one of the most important thing a private citizen can do is "buy American". That is , if you can find anything that is American Made anymore. But if you have the option, you should buy American made products, they may be a little more expensive, but it's worth it, in my opinion.
