: : : : : : : : By the way, as usual, Armstrong SD is years behind everyone else. Community service has been a graduation requirement in Leechburg since 1988.
: : : : : : : So, because Leechburg has it, it's a good thing?
: : : : : : : It think it's a bad idea to make it a requirement.
: : : : : : : Yeah, I guess you're right. After all, Leechburg is such a great town. The people who live there are very civil minded. No druggies and welfare bums roaming the streets or anything...right?
: : : : : : I think that he was just pointing out that ASD, and Kittanning/FC are, as always, decades behind everyone else.
: : : : : : And no, Leechburg's no panacea, but it's head and shoulders above Ford City--at least there are businesses and restaurants there, and paved streets, and it's not nearly as crime ridden as Kittanning.
: : : : : Think again. Drugs and crime are far worse in Leechburg than they are in Kittanning or Ford City. I have friends who live in all three. Believe me, it's MUCH worse in Leechburg.
: : : : : How is the asd BEHIND Leechburg? Just because they do something doesn't mean it's a step FORWARD.
: : : : : This mentality that ANY change is change for the BETTER is just plain ridiculous.
: : : : : Do you have kids? Do you MAKE them perform community service? If so, did you do so before or after it was a "requirement"/ Do YOU perform any community service?
: : : : : It just shouldn't be REQUIRED. If they want to encourage it, fine, but it shouldn't be a requirement.
: : : : : I doubt it's even legal to make it a requirement.
: : : : Community Service is a requirement for a number of high schools in Pennsylvania. I've seen a statistic that shows about 10% of all high schools have community service as a graduation requirement. Not a common requirement, but it could become more so in the future.
: : : Have you heard of ANYBODY challegeing this requirement in a court of law?
: : : Please explain to me how a school district can legally force a student to perform community service, even as a punishment for something, let alone as a requirement for graduation.
: : : Like somebody else asked, who determines what "community service" is? Hell, if it's legal, why not fire all the custodial staff for the district and have the kids do the work? Why not make it 40 hours PER WEEK? Do you honestly think that a judge would rule that the districts can do this?
: : : It's complete bs.
: : oh, also....
: : Just because a district is doing something different, doesn't mean it's doing something better.
: : Just because they are doing something and haven't been stopped, doesn't mean what they are doing is legal.
: There is nothing wrong with a little community service, a few hours helping at a library, church or something isn't going to hurt anything. It they are members of an organization like the boy scouts or if they go to a nursing home to sing Christmas Carols or visit a few of the folks- what would it hurt?It wakes some kids up nd they realize- hey there is something I can do to make a difference besides listening to my I pod or playing the 360.Maybe pass out some sandwhiches to those who have nothing, help at the Salvation Army, something to get them involved, they will like it.
I didn't say it would hurt anybody, or that it wouldn't help anyone. I just said they have no business forcing it on the students. If they want to try to convince the kids to do it, fine, but they have no business making it a requirement for graduation.
...BTW what with the liberals successful removal of anything Christain from the schools, I highly doubt they would be allowed to sing Christmas carols for credit toward graduation from high school.
