: : : WEST KITTANNING -- One of Jeff Johns' banana splits might be a bite bigger than another one -- but who's measuring when you're sitting in front of more than five pounds of ice cream and toppings with some whipped cream and a cherry on top, trying to cool off on a hot summer day?
: : : Johns isn't measuring the five-pounder splits he dishes out at Jordan's Soft Serve along Route 268. He just keeps heaping it on.
: : : "We never worry about measuring. It's not good business," Johns said. "You should give until your cup overflows. If it's a bite or two more than five pounds, or it spills over, so what. No two are ever the same. They're all handmade works of art."
: : : "I use real good ingredients, and we give you a lot of it, and we don't care about making a lot of money," he said. "I love to be generous. I pity my poor accountant at the end of the day, but we manage to make a living."
: : :
: : : story continues below
:
: : : That's how you make a great banana split, he said.
: : : Johns starts, of course, by slicing up fresh bananas.
: : : "We always pick our bananas from local produce," he said. "I make my money here, so I spend my money here."
: : : He adds in his own homemade strawberry and banana ice cream. The recipe is top secret. All Johns can say about it is that it's made with real fruit.
: : : That makes up the middle part of the treat. He then fills in each end of the dish with loads of vanilla and chocolate ice cream.
: : : Fresh fruit goes on top, no measuring, followed by too much chocolate, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry.
: : : How many spoons he sticks in the banana split depends on how many people are eating from it.
: : : "Sometimes our banana splits get out of control. It falls out of the cup, but it's a lot of fun eating it," he said.
: : : When a group of kids comes over from the nearby Belmont recreational complex, they sometimes pitch their money together and buy one banana split for all of them to share.
: : : "You'll hear them screaming, 'Billy, quit eating all the chocolate' and fighting over it," Johns said. "If we're not busy and I have the time, I'll grab the chocolate syrup and go over and heap more of it on top."
: : : Johns says he's amazed when a skinny little kid can eat an entire one of his splits like it's nothing.
: : : "I'm a giant, and I can't eat that much," he said.
: : : The ice cream business has been in Johns' family for 26 years. He's so well known for the amount of ice cream that he scoops out that kids follow him around calling him the ice cream man.
: : : The business was recently selected as having the best ice cream by people in the community in a Readers' Choice survey. Johns says he appreciates his customers' support.
: : : You can make a banana split at home, but "better leave it to the professionals," Johns joked.
: : : "We make one or two, and then all of a sudden the next five people in line want one too," Johns said. "If you start with the best, you end with the best."
: : They need to do some improvements at the store. Ice cream is good, but 1/2 of the time the machines are not working and half torn apart. I quit going there because it just doesn't look like the kind of place i would want to eat.
: The article said a skinny 13 yr. old ate a 5 lb. banana split so I guess it isn't all fat people doing the eating .
I think this was a message, stating this is how Fat People BEcoME.
