: : : : : : : : I just had to brng this to the forefront of the board.
: : : : : : : : Somebody in another post wrote "The people have spoken during the election" in reference to consolidation.
: : : : : : : : This person was right.
: : : : : : : : James A. Solak (against consolidation) 508 74.05%
: : : : : : : : Michael Nortrup (for consolidation) 176 25.66%
: : : : : : : : Write-in Votes 2 0.29%
: : : : : : : : The other two candidates ran unopposed.
: : : : : : : Consolidation will have to happen, but ASD needs to prepare for consolidation. Don't do wasteful spending and actucally provide a quality education and I will vote for consolidation tomorrow.
: : : : : : : ASD has to earn it.
: : : : : : These are the same people that are happy with the status quo, bombed out streets in Ford City and Kittanning being not much better, a lesser educaton for their tax dollar, no local jobs- go people against consolidation , you are winning a big "booby" prize.....
: : : : : It is like I said in the postings below. This poster seems to think if you ran unopposed, you were not wanted in your area. The folks from Ford City had their say and they so no consolidation. That point has been stated. why beat a dead horse when the decision to be made is far away. This guy would like to have board members thrown off the board to help further his cause. He is spouting corruptuion and the works. Let the issue rest until the figures are out and it is easily seen if consolidation is the best or not. Pahse 2 has just begun.
: : : : No, I never said that anybody who ran unopposed was automatically unwanted in their area.
: : : : You however, Dodge, like to imply that since a person was "elected" it means they ARE wanted in their area, even though they faced no opponent. You even imply the fact that they ran unopposed is evidence that they are wanted.
: : : : I simply said that nobody realated by blood or marriage to a board member should be permitted to be employed by the district and nobody should be permitted to be on the board when they are related in such a way to district employee.
: : : : No "cause" of mine would be furthered by this. It is simply a matter of right or wrong. For example, a person should not be able to get their spouse a teaching job, nor should said person be permitted to vote their spouse a big juicy raise. It's just not right, and it's costing the taqxpayers dearly, both in dollars and quality of education.
: : : : The consolidation issue is definately not "far away". It is now.
: : : : As for "beating a dead horse", I think those who are pushing for consolidation should think about that. They've bee trying abd trying for this for decades now. It's been voted down time after time. They even tried it. They consolidated, found it cost far too much, then deconsolidated. Now they continue to argue and push for it again.
: : : : That is "beating a dead horse".
: : : : If the decision was "far away", they would not be into "Phase 2".
: : :
: : : well hey Jon I guess we can both make assumptions and not be able to prove who is right. so I accept that as your opnion and I will have mine.
: : : I think if we want to have community schools then so be it. We want the Worthington high School remodeled and opened up. So if we move in that direction, that is that. i hate to do it, but I can pay the larger tax amount. I guarantee you the worthington area can graduate just as big a class as Elderton does. In fact maybe bigger. Probably damn near the size of Ford City. So lets be fair across the board. If the board moves toward a remodeling plan, I will bring this issue to the front of the board. And I will fight for it tooth and nail. We can get the worthington mascot out of storage. I do believe it is a Bison.
: : They didn't have to build a new consolidated school when they closed Worhtington. I'm not even saying it should have been done. I have no idea. I was only in 10th grade when they did that. There were I think 2 kids in my class who came to Kittanning from Worhtington though.
: : Actually, I see no reason why they couldn't close Elderton. The kids could certainly fit into KHS, but then you still have the bussing.
: : The thing to do there is close Elderton. Get rid of every single person who works there, and put some of the kids in W. Shammokin and some in Apollo, whichever they are closer to.
: : If you are so passionate about Worthington High, you and all the people who want to reopen it should put together some of your own money and make it a private school. Keep your hands out of the rest of our pockets.
: : People keep posting the number of graduates for the schools this year. If those are accurate, then they could easily close Elderton, and split the all the kids in the district between Kitt, FC and W.Shammokin according to school capacity and proximity to schools.
: : I find it absolutely ridiculous that people are trying to use LOW attendance figures as a reason to spend MORE money.
: But the low attendance figures ARE the reason we're spending more money.
: We have the same buildings and the same number of personnel servicing less than half of what the enrollment numbers used to be. It just doesn't make good business sense no matter what side of the fence you fall on in terms of consolidation versus non-consolidation.
So then what you are saying is that a new school isn't the answer. It's firing some of the teachers.
Building a new school will not reduce the number of teachers. Look at West Hills Elem..
