: : : : : : : Fact of the matter is one family owns and controls Armstrong County. They want no competition. Many businesses have been turned away because of their "influence."
: : : : : : : In my opinion they are the puppet masters and the commissioners are the puppets.
: : : : : : : It doesn't matter how big the school is no business is going to come in here unless it benefits the Snyders.
: : :
: : : : : : Developers have tried. I befriend a developer who tried in Ford City. Kittanning has had several people approach them. Northpointe would be up shitcreek if it wasn't for Mellon's processing center.
: : : : : : People want a super school, yet we do not have the tax base to support it. I don't see any wisdom in that, unless you really want to hurt this area by raising taxes because of the higher cost of education and evenually driving everybody away.
: : : : : Do we have a tax base to support many small schools at extremely low capacities, declining enrollments, and buildings in dire need of repair?
: : : :
: : : : As opposed to spending $100 Million on a new school??? Yes.
: : : Once again, ill-informed citizens don't realize that the facilities master plan estimates recommended renovations of around $100M.
: : What are you alking about?
: : Are you talking about the $136 the board says it "could cost" to "bringing the buildings up to current standards"?
: : If so, keep in mind those plans ALSO include renovations to Elderton, Kittanning Township and Shannock Valley elementary schools, along with Kittanning Junior High and West Shamokin high schools.
: : This is the high end of the estimate...what it "could" cost.
: : The estimate for the renovations for the 3 schools that would be included in a consolidation was much lower.
: : I'll try to find the exact figures, but believe me it was much lower.
: : The cost of a new consolidated school will not include the cost of renovating the other 5 schools in the distrct, Elderton Elem., Kittanning Twp. Elem., Shannock Valley Elem., Kittanning Junior High, and West Shamokin high.
: : You would have to add those costs, which are a considerable part of the $136 million to the cost of the new consolidated school, which I guarantee will be well over $100 million.
: : .
: Um, FC Jr/Sr High cost to renovate = 32.6M
: Kitt Jr High (I believe this should be included) = 15M
: Kitt HS = 24.5M
: Elderton = 26M
: Now, with my math, I come up with $97.5M. And also keep in mind that NONE of the estimates for renovations included ANYTHING about asbestos abatement! That will add significantly huge costs to most levels of renovation.
: Yes, I did include the level 3 renovation reccomendations. It's usually prudent to go with conservative estimates to account for the unexpected (like asbestos, etc.).
You must be looking at different numbers than I saw in the paper. Or maybe you were looking at the "state of the art" figures they had at that meeting.
Also, why are you including the $15 mill. KJHS figure?
They would not be attending this new consolidated school, so that work will still be done even with a consolidated school.
What about the inevitable cost oversuns there will be with a new school.
By the way, "conservative" figures would be the lower figures,
Any asbeatos in the building would have been removed during the previos renovations.
