: : : : : : I was in the IGA in Kittanning today and the man in front of me paid for his food with an access card. After that he put up 2 boxes of dog treats and a dog flea collar, which he paid for with cash. So my question is, if this man needs the taxpayers help to buy his own food but can afford to buy treats for his dog(s), should he be getting a handout at all.

: : : : : : Here’s a little more info. His bill for his food came to $22 and some change. The dog treats and collar came to $9 and some change. So he spent almost half on his dog(s) as what he spent on his own food. He pulled out a rather large wad of money to pay for the dog treats. He looked very healthy to hold a job and to top it all off, he put his food and dog treats into a back pack and got on his bicycle and off he went.

: : : : : : I like dogs, but if this person needs my help to eat, I don’t think he should own dogs. Of course, he could have been buying the treats for someone else, but somehow I doubt it.

: : : : : Why does this suprise you? This is everywhere. You should have seen some of the stuff that I saw when I worked as a cashier in a grocery store.

: : : : : I have a former friend, 34 years old, 5 kids and 15 years on welfare, has never held down a steady job. Every year or so, she says that welfare is telling her she has to get a job. She still hasn't gotten on and she is still on welfare. Now she is saying that she is depressed and suicidal so that she can get SSI, and welfare, AND so that she doesn't have to get a job. There isn't and never was one thing wrong with her where she could get a job. That welfare reform they had all those years ago did nothing, and honest people who really do need help never get it, but you have all these lazy people who want to pop out a kid every year so that they get more money and never have to work. It's BS.

: : : :
: : : : Yep, it IS BS. Many, many years ago I used to work for a supermarket. This was back when actual foodstamps were used, rather than the Access card now used. I was a cashier. Back then, people were give actual coin change for anyting less than a dollar. These low lifes would come to the checkout with 5 packages of KoolAid. I think they were about 17 cents each back then. (No sugar added). The low lifes would lay each package down on the counter and place a one dollar foodstamp with each pack, and expect us to give them 83 cents times 5. (KoolAid is taxible, so it was a couple pennies less). We were prohibited BY LAW to allow this since this is abuse of the system and the store could lose their liscense to accecpt foodstamps. Man.... those low-lifes got pissed because that meant they couldn't buy their cigarettes!

: : : Oh I belive it. I too have worked in a supermarket. This was like 10 years ago ( i didn't live in this area then) this black woman came in with a voucher for a local church. It was for food and the only non food item allowed was toilet paper. She went to the office to get a pack a cigerettes, brought them to the check out (this is before I knew she had the voucher) I rang them up first, then she took the pack, and opened it. I rang everything else up, did the voucher, asked for whatever the price of the cigs were. She said she didn't have it. I had to close my lane, the manager came out, told her she had to pay for the cigs, and then she used that classic line "your doing this because I'm black". I learned later that everytime there is a new cashier (me) that she tried to pull that stunt.

: : : A few christmas' ago, my friends sister in law lied to some agency (I don't know who) and said that she had cancer and she got free christmas presents for her kids. She took them all back to walmart for cash.

: : : It is unbelieveable what some lengths these people will go.

: : What's unbelievable is how many times people can come to this webboard and bitch about the same topics, and not one of them is anything positive or good news.

:
: You got it. Not only that, but there are much, much bigger problems facing our economy and our society as a whole compared to some guy buying cigarettes, Pepsi, or dog collars and receiving foodstamps at the same time.

: The powers-to-be got them right wehere they want them. Put the focus on some nominal matter while the walls are caving in around you.

: If they do not see it by now, they never will.

: Let them keep talking about their cigarettes, Pepsi and dog collars while the place caves in around them. Pick up a national newspaper and read, it just may enlighten to you some much bigger issues.
