: : : : : : : If a student wrote this essay on their own they would be in violation of some zero tolerance policy and be expelled. This teacher "probably" won't get in trouble because it just isn't like him. I hope the link works. I just had to vent. I am curious to what the teacher on the board has to say about this. I guess teachers don't have a zero tolerance policy that they have to follow.

: : : : : : It was wrong and he admitted it, probably nothing will be done.If a student wrote something on his own, he/she probably would be punished. If this was a college writing assignment, I don't think a word would be said.
: : : : :
: : : : : As a teacher, I wouldn't even consider such a writing topic!! (And my main job is to teach writing!)
: : : : : As a parent, I would be extremely concerned and raise a lot of hub bub about the writing assignment!!
: : : : : I think the teacher should be evaluated. If this teacher is top notch, why the lapse in integrity? Who in his or her right mind would assign such a topic? Questions as to what motivated the teacher would be my concern. Suspension would be up to the powers-that-be.
: : : : : I know of one teacher in my school district that was fired from her job because she sold comic books to her students as part of a second business she and her husband ran. One of the parents complained about the content of some of the comic books and WHAMO!
: : : : : The public basically burned this woman at the stake.
: : : : : If you let the public decide, sure, the guy would be out of a job in no time. Who supports such nonsense?
: : : : : As for a student writing on this topic and handing it in, say as a "free writing topic" paper, I would do as I have always done whenever I see a red flag...talk to the student first and then sit down with the parents/guardians (with the student present) to discuss the matter. It is part of my job to document such things with the principal, so the administration would be notified. As a teacher in my school, I am allowed to make my own calls on student discipline in such matters.
: : : : : Save every kid. Listen to them. Be a role model with integrity.
: : : : : THAT'S the kind of teacher I am.
: : : : : The kid with the squirt gun bothers me only because the threat is there for violence in our nation's schools. Look at Columbine. Look at me sitting in a classroom full of kids and not knowing if one is going to go off the deep end at any moment.
: : : : : I am a parent first. I want zero tolerance for weapons because I have children to raise. In the meantime, I am trying to raise the community's children by being a fair teacher.
: : : : : Is that so wrong?
: : : : It was a BIG PLASTIC BRIGHT ORANGE squirt gun. You need to be worried about the ones that concealed and snuck. It was obvious since he wasn't trying to hide it that there was no ill content.
: : : You asked me my opinion. You DON'T have to yell at me. Like I said, walk in my shoes, then you would understand.
: : If fear is going to over shadow education maybe some people should rethink their careers.
: Yeah, and people who have no clue should rethink their comments.
: I said to walk in my shoes, not cower like a cur. Teachers wouldn't go to work if they feared the kids. Do you know how many fights I have personally gotten in the middle of to save my students from suspension?
: Guess not.
: I suppose you laugh at the airport security because they think a box cutter is considered a weapon...or a pair of shoes. We do far worse to those "violators" of the law than a little bit of suspension from school.
: Whatever. I'm tired of this thread. I'll just go back and do my job of saving the kids and teaching them to be good, LAW abiding citizens.
: And somewhere throw in a bit of common sense and intelligence if I'm lucky.
Truth must hurt. What is a cur.? I believe in being law abiding but I think if a student has zero tolerance why shouldn't the faculty.
