: : : Big bad Mike said that you don't need much education to do a C.O.'s job at the jail...He may be right, but it takes a very special person to do the job, and to do it right. I would still like to see Big bad Mike do the job for about a month to see how he likes it. See if the low wage that we get payed is worth it. Being a Corrections Officer is potentially a very dangerous job. The county (commissioners) don't seem to appreciate the level of professionalizm and sacrifice that it takes to be a (jail guard)...And some of the county residents don't either...We help protect the county from these inmates. Not just the court system. We have to watch as some of these inmates get free meals, medical treatment, medications and access to a counselor. We (C.O.'s) have to pay for these services. Where is the justice for that? Plus so does every other law abiding American citizen does. What are we teaching the next generation of kids? If you go to jail don't worry, you'll get all kinds of stuff (services) free of charge. Whose making the money on all these services?
: : A very special person to be a correctional officer? In Armstrong County? Please, get real. We are not talking about Alcatraz or Sing Sing or the super max. It's the county jail not a state prison or fed penitentiary, for crying out loud. Most of the inmates there are waiitng for trial or waiting to be transferred to state prison. Protecting the public? As far as I know, no one ever broken out or escaped, so the is really no threat to the public. You complain about the "free" meals, treatment the inmates receive. No sh**t. What else is new? So, you are pissed that they get all of these services for free? Services you have to pay for. Ah, hate to break it to you but that come with the territory. If this bothers you so much to babysit these inmates, go back to school, get more than your HS diploma/GED, so you can get into a better career field. No one is forcing you to babysit these people, are they? What are we teaching the next generation of kids? For one that a high school education will get you a lower echelon, low paying job, like a county C.O.
: : Enjoy.
: : Nope Not an Alcatraz or a Sing Sing, More like dealing with the people you routinely see in the news. These cases that make the headlines, most recently national news. We deal with people that know they have a snow ball's chance of getting out of their legal predicament. In situations where there seems like no other way out these desperate individuals some times decide they don't want to live. This is where bodily fluids some times come into play. A nice little fringe benefit for working in a correctional facility.
: As for being a lower echilon and a minimal high school education being common among staff you would be dead wrong. These aren't alot of burn outs that we are talking about. We have officers with college degrees and other forms of education. Not to mention, years of education from real life and certifications are decorating the resumes of our officers. I see the main problem with your approach to this "every one is replaceable" ideal is this... No matter how educated, trained, or well connected sooner or later you will be replaced. Your education won't protect you. We live in an age when every one is trying to do it cheaper and faster. Well Mike... I feel we have people like this to thank for this attitude. You should be proud of yourself. Now go line up in the unemployment line. You've been laid off... your job went to Mexico. Enjoy
see if your highly educated CO's can translate this: "voy a trabajar con Senor Elroy" & enjoy all the suicides and body fluids! ha ha ha.
