Nancy Mosser Casting collected applications with headshots back in October 2000 or so for Mothman. The primary roles were already set by then, but they needed photo doubles and stand-ins... No sense having Richard Gere standing out there freezing when someone else can be a "landmark" while the director stages other characters in a scene.
I talked with Nancy when she was in Kittanning, was told that the director will go through the headshots when he needs a certain look and might even call several people in just hours before a scene. Also there is a chance of being picked up out of the crowd - seems that two ladies who were unpaid extras for the street scene were asked to come back as paid extras for following scenes.
When filling out an application, be sure to list all acting experience.... it shows you're used to taking directions. One lady I met from Vandergrift (a paid extra) has appeared in commercials and also had quite a list of films where she was an extra or was in a minor supporting role. It helps to show experience.
