Just a word of thanks for the website.  I was born in Kittanning and haven't seen it since I was a small child.  It is nice to be able to see "home" at the touch of my keyboard.  Keep up the good work.

Carl,
Thanks for your wonderful site.  We live in Harrisonburg Virginia, but my husband, Mike, is from Kittanning and his parents still live there.  We don't get to visit nearly often enough, but with your website, I feel I can "come home" whenever I like!

Carl,

Your site jogged some memories. I was born in Indiana in 1952, moved to Rural Valley a month later, and then to Kittanning in 1957 (KHS ’69) and moved to Pittsburgh in 1970. I’ve been in Columbus, OH for 18 years now.

My dad was Howard Little Jr., mother Betty (both deceased), and sister Melissa (KHS ’66) and we lived in the "Campbell Manor" suburban housing development between Rt. 268 and old Rt. 422 (just down the road from Dom’s Auto Salvage!). Dad was a claims representative for Kemper Insurance and as I recall his best buddy was a fellow named Al Mendus, whose kids Kevin and Kiki were my classmates at KHS. Dad always spent some time in the mornings at Clark’s Restaurant (corner of McKean and Market) with his pals.

I went to Pine Hill School and East Franklin School, neither of which are schools anymore. My junior high, I recall, has at least partially burned down (the orange brick building with the gym and auditorium in it); and I don’t know if my high school (the one up in Wick City) is still in use or not.

I was known as "Mark Little" all the years I lived there even though my real name was "Howard" also - my mother’s idea. It was fun to see some names I knew in your email section - Debby Kunkle was in my class at KHS, Dennis Cramer was a neighbor, and Dean Stewart I presume is the younger brother of Geralyn and Sandy Stewart; Geralyn and I were an "item" for a while, way-y-y-y back when.

I ended my stay in Washington, PA and didn't really want to come back to hot, hazy dry TX. lol How close to Washington are you?  (nearly two hours by the fastest routes and no traffic)

Any covered bridges in your area? (see below)

This was a great walking tour, only one finger got tired..:-) Come see my little Methodist church. Thank You for inviting us along.  (my pleasure!)

Hi Carl:

Found your site through Yahoo. Wanted to find some info on Kittanning. I enjoyed visiting your personal home page too. Incidently, my daughter-in-law began teaching at Chabot this past year. She majored in English. I live in Pittsburg, CA. However, I was born and raised in Armstrong County, Pa. in a small mining community called Sagamore. It has dwindled to just a few homes now. I remember as a child going to Kittanning, to me, that was going to the big city!! Dad would take us
down to the park and we would marvel at the old cannons and look in awe at the many pleasure boats and once in awhile see an old riverboat with its big wheel turning and plying the Allegheny bound for who knew where?! I really like the picture of the bridge and the courthouse in the distance.

Anyways, I enjoyed your "20" and photos, plus your lovely home. Only question is ... who mows all that grass?

Dave Hartzell

Visit my web page at: http://www.geocities.com/~jacklondons/ and please sign my guest book.

Slight correction. Dave - that's my DAD'S house and he's stuck with the grass mowing, all 6 acres of it.  It was great having all that area to play in, though it wasn't all play.  I shared in the grass mowing then, AND picking up sticks in front of whoever was mowing, AND weeding the garden, AND picking veggies... all great memories.

There's a grove of locust trees behind the house, LOTS of sticks!!  At least an acre of garden, LOTS of veggies :)

Carl,

I got into your home page looking for an article you once had about two guys who blew themselves up while trying to get rid of a rodent.  I thought it was hilarious and wanted to send it to my sister.  If you have a copy could you e-mail it to me?

Haven't been to Kittanning  since my grandfather died in December of 1980.  His name was Fulmer Cox and He lived directly accross the street from the fire department on the hill above the courthouse.  My uncle and aunt still live there, Craig and Edythe Cox.  They have three sons,
Jim, Roger and Keith Cox.

I don't know if that big bridge in the photo has a name.  But I always knew it as grampas bridge because he always told me as a kid that he owned it!  I suppose that there are a lot of people there that like to claim it.

One of these days, I will share this homepage with my mother.  She will enjoy.  I think I may have to set one up for my hometown soon.

Thank you,

Carl Lauster

You should have the gopher story email already, Carl.  That story is at http://www.kittanning.com/gopher.htm which was relocated off my personal page.  Thanks for stopping by.  Carl B.

Hello again, Carl:

Hope this finds you well and reasonably content.  I hope you post this email from me on Kittanning Dot Com.  It has occured to me that this would be a marvelous way to hear from old friends from the past.  Please show my email address so that some of my old friends can get in touch with me.  New friends are welcome to write me, as well.  My email address is:

tcooper@iamerica.net

Sure would like to hear from some of those beautiful old girlfriends of mine.  They don't make 'em like they used to, you know.  The K.H.S. Class of'48 through '56 had some of the most beautiful women you would ever want to see.  Just ask around, some of the old timers will confirm that fact.  I think there must have been something in the spring water we used to drink on our way to Buttermilk Falls.  Not kidding!

Again, thanks for all the hard work you put into Kittanning Dot Com.  I have referred your site to many of my friends; friends from all over the world, now that we have ICQ and the ability to reach each other.

Oh, by the way, if any of your viewers would like to download ICQ, here is the website to do so:

Hi Carl:

Jodi Sysyn Myers here, from the Kittanning Riverfront Commission.  This site has become fabulous!  I think it is time to include an updated picture of the park! I would love for these out of town folks to see what's new.  I am sure some of them are going to want to see it in person.  To them, we extend a warm welcome!

A description of the opening day ceremonies and the estimated 15,000+ in attendance would be great.  Maybe you could scan in the gorgeous program from the weekend-long event...

Thank you for keeping us in touch with those who have a Kittanning connection but maybe have moved away.

Please keep up the great work!

Dear Carl,

I just love your website on Kittanning.  I grew up in Kittanning until I was 13 (1964-1978).  I went to St. Mary's School, and was very sad to hear that it has closed. My maiden name is Roncher and I lived at the top of North Ave across from the woods.  I haven't been to Kittanning since 1988, but have many fond memories.  Your site brought back a lot of those memories and really made me homesick for Kittanning.

I moved to Scottsdale, Az when I was 13 with my mother.  I now live in Florida (Fort Walton Beach area) with my husband who is in the Air Force.  Other than a couple of Aunts and Uncles I've lost touch with Kittanning.  So please post my email address and maybe someone I lost touch with see it.

What a treat!  I was born in Kittanning and joined the Air Force right after High school in 1973.  Since then I've been back numerous times as my family still lives there.  I have since retired from the military and live in a beautiful area but I must admit when I saw your walking tour it almost brought a tear to my eye. I need to visit more often.  I had forgotten how wonderful Kittanning is.

Carl--You have done a really magnificent job here!  I was born at good ol' Armstrong Co. Memorial (the original one), lived on Highland Ave. for awhile, then moved to the country--next to the Community Drive In.

My first paid job was at the YMCA--lifeguard and swimming teacher.  (It is not widely known, but several of us used to spend our lunch time swimming across the river and back.  I think it was frowned upon by the Boss, but . . .)

I am looking for a good photograph of St. Michael's Lutheran Church at Brick Church.  Not the present building but the one that was torn down after the present building was built.  I am also looking for a picture of the general store at Brick Church while it was operational.  If
anyone has one, email me at dphoto2@blueskyweb.com

Thanks for your reply.  You can see my page at http://www.apollotrust.com/~smolnar. No problem with the $30.00  just let me know who to make a check out to and where to send it.

This property has been in my family since it was constructed.  My Great Uncle Charles Schall was the original owner.  He operated a auto repair shop in the building in the rear.  My Aunt Martha Schall lived there until her passing. I have an item by item list of materials and cost when it was
constructed.  I wish things were that cheap today.  You are right Kittanning is a great place.  It is my intention to live there when I retire and spend a lot of relaxing time on that front porch.

Dear Carl,

I lived in Kittanning for about a year, and we visited my Mother's family quite often.  I went to kindergarten in the McCean* House.  I remember how we spent a year there (my Father was in Korea), and in the winter the snow was piled up on each side of the road.  One night my Mother and I walked down to my Grandmother's and there were people ice skating in the middle of the street.

I'm of an age now that I wish sometimes that we could go back to those days when there was only radio and lots of playing outside, both summer and winter.  I loved my visits to Kittanning.  And your "Walking Tour" brought back a lot of memories.  My mother's name was Edwards.  So most of the Edwards that live there are my relatives.  I got away from family and family moments for so long, now I wish that I hadn't.

The "Walking Tour" is the BEST I've ever seen on the Internet, it's so great that it comes from a small town like Kittanning.

Very Respectfully,

Hi.  I sure have enjoyed your web page.  Just for the heck of it, I punched in Kittanning, PA on AOL and up you popped!  I thought for sure Kittg was too small to be on the net!

My Dad's family grew up in Kittanning, PA.  He was born at 347 Franklin Avenue in 1930.  My grandparents were married there.  We now live in Savannah, Georgia and are coming to visit the only person left there - Granny. She is in her 90's and now lives "up on the hill" in West Kittg.

We are planning to come within the next two weeks and after seeing the write up on the festival, I wanted to ask you what day was the most rewarding day to spend at the festival.  Our schedule is flexible give or take a few days, so I wanted to see if you had an opinion - we've never been to the Kittanning festival and were thrilled to see that we may be able to build our trip around it. All of my best memories from growing up took place in Kittanning, and there is a lot of very interesting family history there. I'm sure you are busy and I understand if you do not have time to answer my mail, but it was just a thought.  Thanks so much for putting one of my favorite places on the web!

Thanks for the wonderful web page! I am a native who now lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (Roll Tide Roll!). I am now a pediatric nurse, teaching at the University of Alabama. I lived in Garrett's Run, on old route 22 and later up route 422 from '67-79. It was really nice to see my hometown. I also think of Kittanning alot during the winter months when I am watching the weather reports of snow up north. :-) However, I do receive my fair share of bad weather, in the form of tornadoes. But, so far, I've managed to dodge them!

I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me from West Hills, Lenape, St. Mary's, the YMCA, or my old neighborhoods. Please feel free to publish my e-mail address on the web page.  Look for me on ESPN at the Alabama football games! (Don't worry, my pro team loyalties remain with Pittsburgh!)

Hi Carl,

Yes, I'd really appreciate it if you'd repeat my request for recollections of Anna John.
Incidentally, I never saw the original mention.  Am I overlooking something?  Or are my newfound computer skills wobblier than I thought?

Your skills arelikely better than my recall. I thought I put your request on the front page Bulletin Board of the site, but the file has been overwritten since then.  The fact that your original email didn't get posted, and your followup on May 14th, 1998 isn't recorded in my updates log - I'm going to claim webmaster error.  That email follows this, and sorry.  Carl

Referencedl email from Bob:

Hey Carl,  I e-mailed you about a month ago; reckon it got lost in cyberspace.  Anyway, I'm trying to glean information about and/or recollections of Anna John, who lived on  Wilson Avenue and worked as a practical nurse until her death in the mid '40s.  She was a great aunt of mine who pretty much raised me until I entered an orphanage when I was nine.  Would appreciate hearing from anyone who remembers her, as well as from anyone who knows anything about my dad, Walt Woods.

Even though only my first nine years were spent in Kittanning, your site jogs a lot of boyhood memories.  For what it's worth, here's what impressed a skinny kid during the first half of the 1940s:

My Aunt Annie collecting old shoes from our male relatives, then saving them, along with all the knives that needed sharpening, until the day each spring when the hobo she called "my bum" showed up at our back door.

A friendly mailman named Bill who, when I was very young, often stopped by the fence that was erected to keep me in the backyard. Then he'd lift me up and place me in the fork of one of the ancient "toby" trees that lined Wilson Avenue so I could sit there and pretend to puff on the cigar-like pods.

Worrying my mother by disappearing into the woods along Johnson Avenue to pick wild elderberries during our many walks to the cemetery.

Being lifted up by a distant relative, whom I think was sheriff, and handed through a hole in the courthouse wall for the entertainment of a group of hung over but harmless inmates.

Buying fistfuls of penny candy at mom and pop stores along Orr Avenue -- for pennies.

Crowding into a tiny booth at the Columbia theater with my friend Tom Steim, whose dad was the projectionist, to watch Saturday's cowboy movie speed backwards as it was rewound.

Bumping into old Doc Wyant on his rounds and solemnly promising to heed his warnings about the evils of tobacco.

Getting paid a quarter for helping the roustabouts dismantle the tent when the circus was ready to leave town.

Peeking under the tent flaps to spy on the woman singer with the traveling minstrel show that played each summer in the large, vacant lot across from the train station.

Wondering about the sad look adults got on their faces before answering when I asked what the gold stars in so many windows meant.  And later on being proud of  understanding the reason for the spontaneous parades and general hullabaloo that broke out when VJ Day was declared in 1945.

Thanks for sharing those memories, Bob - makes it seem even better to be here.  :)

Dear Carl,

I'm hoping that someone who reads this may be able to help me with some family information.  I have a picture of my great-grandmother, taken in the late 50s when she was approximately 80 years old, in front of the Colonel John Armstrong monument.  My grandfather wrote on the back of the photo "my mother's great-uncle Col. What a pleasure to have found the "Kittanning" site ... It's like being home.  I'm from Kittanning transplanted to Florida, but my roots will always be in Kittanning.  Even to this day when asked where are you from (everybody in Florida is from someplace) I always answer Kittanning.  Many references to Whalen Park ... when I was a kid it was the "Cemetary" ... we used it like a
park.

Keep up the good work ... I'll check back from time to time.

Hi from Michigan.  My friend, Joan Savona Whiting told me about your page and now that I finally got a computer--I can see it!!

Wonderful picture of Kittanning from West Kittanning Hill.  I spent a lot of time there when I was a little girl.  I visited my Grandmother Smith in West Kittanning --a lot-- (think my parents needed a vacation from me)  and for one glorious summer I had a pony that I used to ride there.  I'd go to Bluff Street, look down, and wonder what my friends were doing and what I was
missing down in Kittannning.

I was reading all the e-mails and sniffling most of the time--I miss Kittanning a lot and will probably move back there someday.  It was a wonderful place to grow up and although I was rather glad to move away and be somewhat anonymous, as I've grown older, I've really come to appreciate being in a place where many people know your name and your family.  My sister and
her family still live there and, so far, we have never missed a Christmas in Kittanning!  My husband's sister & father still live in Manorville.

Keep up the good work.

You have done an excellent job on the design of this web page.  I probably have not explored far enough this evening to find exactly what I was looking for.  Many years ago I was privileged to be a member of the Kittanning Firemans Band. Bill McGann was the manager at the time and the Colona boys were the directors.

I had heard recently that the band was planning a reunion possibly next year.  I'm all in favor of that and will bring my horn all the way from Texas just to play in the band one more time.

Wish you would include any information on this in your web page as a update on what is to take place as I am sure they probably do not have any way except through the local media of contacting the ex members who live out of the area.

Thanks a lot,
Robert (Bob) Green

There is a link to the band that was emailed to me.  Here it is ( and we'll look forward to seeing you next year.

Carl,
--just a quick note to thank-you for your Kittanning web site.  I  grew up in the Kittanning  & Meadville area (we moved to Meadville when the new PPG Plant opened -- my dad transferred from  the Ford City plant and was one of the first hired in Meadville.  If you have a second, please check out our web site -- the page on our site titled:  "Loved Ones Gone On" is dedicated to my dad, Clifford Karns -- he passed away a few months ago) and visiting your site is  *almost* like taking a little trip back home.  I especially like the "walking tour".  There are many interesting sites on the tour I never realized were there!

Thanks again for letting a closet 'yankee' in the middle of all these texans have a little taste of home -- I even enjoy using the picture of Kittanning on your main page as our wallpaper when our computer comes on -- my family and I lived in West Kittanning during my teen years and that view is so very familiar.

Till later take care.

--praying  God's Blessings on you & your family,

Have you given up on the site?  I haven't seen an update in a while.  I really look foward to the visitor
comments.

<Deep sigh and a bit of smile>  No, I haven't officially given up but needed to get focussed on paying the bills, don't we all though I guess.  For the past month I've been sharing work on an online catalog for a North Carolina company and we just finished it - that required two trips down south in the last month.  All of it was time-consuming and energy-draining; a development stemming from the work is possibly even more work that can be done from Kittanning through a partnership.

Next project locally?  Dunno  There are a couple of possible projects coming up near here but with skinny skinny budgets, seems like there isn't a lot of loose money floating around here, but in a way that's good - helps us appreciate when times are good.

Like you, I also look forward to visitor comments.  When I'm NOT STUCK in the mud at the bottom of the pond, the email helps get me to the top. Thanks for writing,  Carl  :)

PS:  I guess it might be obvious I'll visit other parts of the country to line up work to do (mostly) from Kittanning.  If you have any projects coming up, please let me know.  My partner and I will be in New Orleans the end of October for the Telecommunications in Education conference and I'll be back in NC shortly after that, then north to Pa.  Flag me down or wave, ok?
