Hi. I enjoyed your walking tour page. My family was first in Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties from 1769/70, and remained there until my own family left in 1966. I still have one uncle residing in Kittanning, in Wick Boro.

Thank you for the McCain / McKean information. As a member, and graduate, of the first Kindergarten class to NOT meet in the McCain House, I was surprised to see your alternate spelling. Apparently I never saw the name McCain House in print during my childhood. I always thought it was the same as the street. I left Kittanning in 1966.

Good luck with your site. Your effort is certainly appreciated from out here.

     Carl,

Thank you for making this web site for our home town. I am trying to tell everyone that I know that is on line to look up this site. I grew up in Ford City and moved to Kittanning after getting married, so my heart really belongs in Armstrong County. Keep up the good work!!!

Hi, I am from the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County. I saw the article in the Leader-Times about your web site and thought I would explore.

In case you do not know what we do, we are a private nonprofit corporation that is the only day-treatment program in the county that trains mentally and physically handicapped adults with job skills in hopes that they will be able to become more self sufficient. They earn wages while getting much needed training (we also provide Adult Basic Education classes to them)

We also run the Armstrong Recycling Center out route 85 as another of our training opportunities and give tours when people schedule them. We also are available for presentation for local groups.

Since we are private non-profit, we need to look to many sources to find grants and hopefully the web will be such a place, but so far I haven't found anything concrete.

It is nice to see that someone is doing something to try and get our area noticed and maybe generate some more revenue for the people who have worked hard all their life to make our area very enjoyable.

I can't wait until all the pages are finished to see what else will be available for many to see.

We are in the process of deciding if it would be helpful to us to be on the web, but haven't decided yet. We do sub-contract work for companies such as: collating, folding, packaging, stapeling, etc.

Any comments that you could offer us would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and good luck on your web page.

My best friend and her husband just moved to Kittanning and, since we have not had the opportunity to visit them, this was the PERFECT way for me to see and learn about their new home. I can now understand why they were anxious to relocate to Kittanning!

You did a wonderful job on the Kittanning website and I wanted to thank you for it. I have a few friends from different states who have asked me where they can find out more about Kittanning and now I have an answer. I have lived here in Kittanning since the day I was born and I didn't know half the information you had listed on your page. I was amazed to learn about the buildings and churches in town, it was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much. I was wondering if you had any plans to include pictures of the Junior High and Senior High schools, I think that would make your tour complete. I'll definitely tell others about your site, Thanks again.

It was nice to be able to visit Kittaning from Lecompte, La. Really was hoping to the see the old place from up on top of West Kittanning. I used to climb the steps to the top just to watch the traffic cross the bridge and going up Market St.. Maybe you could add it to your tour. I know I would enjoy it alot.

I was raised in Wick's City by No. 6 at 1348 Orr. My dad, "Bud Klugh" drove ambulance for No. 6 for years. Don't get home often, or get to drink that "good springwater" on the way to "Buttermilk".

Thanks for the site. Now I can show the grandkids a little of Back Home.

    Carl,

Recently, an individual brought to my attention the Kittanning Website you created for the area. I found the walking tour very enjoyable and informative.  I've been a resident of Armstrong County most of my life. Kittanning's beauty is one of its greatest assets, and I think your walking tour does it justice; however Kittanning's beauty seems to be lost from the Home Page.

Could you possibly give internet visitors a sample of the area's beauty without ever having to read about it.  One suggestion might be to have a picture of the courthouse or view from the West Kittanning hill greet visitors along with the title: Kittanning's Home Page, or have the view be the background for the page.  The  plain grey background promotes such a negative feeling, which does not portray Kittanning?

Thanks for taking the time to create a site for Kittanning and listening to comments.

    gverner

Thank you for stepping up and pointing to a positive improvement for the Kittanning website.  Although it didn't happen overnight, the picture from the hill is now right up front where it belongs.  Any more good ideas, let me know  :)   Carl

PS.  I stepped back and took a second look and a third.  Thank you again!!

Hello- My name is Scott Rayburn, and I am researching Rayburn family history.  My Great-Grandfather was Calvin Rayburn, a well-known, well-liked lawyer and  Armstrong County Judge in the late 1880's. He died in 1912 in Kittanning (I have the original obituary from the Sentinel) I 've learned that a portrait of the Judge was commissioned and hung in the courthouse. Is it still there? I also believe a street in Kittanning was named after him. I have also found references to the "Rayburn Homestead" in Buffalo township - any info on that?

Great job Karl on "The Walking tour of Kittanning", my home town. I was born in a house that still stands on Chestnut Street in 1934. My father Charles Sr. was mayor of Kittanning in the 60's. He also served as Chief Deputy Sheriff of Armstrong County under Sheriff Tom Hutchison, the father of Charlie, the lone casualty of the conflict in the Dominican Republic.

I moved from Kittanning in 1965 to Baltimore, having been transferred by Montgomery Ward, with whom I spent 26 years, until 1981. By the way, the lady on the facade of the old Wards store is called "The Spirit of Progress". When Mr. Erdos bought the store and was getting ready to remodel, we had a long talk about her. I like to think I was instrumental in his keeping her exposed.

I have in my possession a wonderful photograph of the old "American Legion Band" photographed on "The McCain House Lawn" in panoramic montage showing that great home in its heyday. I want to bring it back to Kittanning to the Museum someday soon. I think it belongs there. My father was a drummer in that band.

I now live in Camp Verde Arizona about 100 miles north of Phoenix. I do get back to Kittanning ocassionally to visit my sister Mary Anne Hankey and her family in Spaces Corners. Next time back I'll look you up.

    Hi, there, Carl:

Just thought I would leave a little note to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading the website you have created for Kittanning. Congratulations are in order!

You may know some of my brothers who still live there in good old Kittanning:  Dick, Joe, Danny and Mike Cooper.  If you run into any of them, give them my regards, will you? I am emailing you from Pineville, Louisiana, where it is raining, today, and the temperature is in the mid fifties.  Again, enjoyed visiting BACK HOME  in Kittanning on your really neat website.

Regards,  Tom Cooper, Sr. (former resident)

Tom, my appreciation for your comments also.  I was in the process of adding Mr. Mohr's nice email (above) when yours came in.  Now I'll have to confess - today's my birthday and what a couple of great surprises!

    (Followup from Tom:)

    Hey, Carl:

Just a short note to let you know it's okay with me if you want to list my email address. Actually, I think it may be very productive as I may hear from folks I haven't seen or heard from in years.

I was trying to think of something that might make the Kittanning.com website a little more active. Perhaps you could invite viewers to DROP QUESTIONS in a VIEWER WANTS TO KNOW slot. Then, invite others to DROP ANSWERS in a VIEWER WANTS TO ANSWER slot.

Hope I'm not being presumptive with the above idea. Just thought I would like to be a contributor in some way.

Many thanks, again, for the terrific work you are doing with Kittanning.com.

     Kindest regards,
    Tom Cooper, Sr.

Good idea, Tom, and thanks. I'll be wanting to keep an eye on the time needed to edit and post results - the website is not entirely self-supporting here yet but maybe local residents will call for (1) website design, (1b) web pages, (1c) banner advertising and artwork, (2) computer handyman work, or (3) general construction handyman work (heavy lifting not allowed).   Free estimates and satisfaction guarantee no matter which hat I wear.   548-5716, Carl

    Hi Carl,

I just got off the phone with my dad, Charles Mohr, who emailed you awhile back. He told me to check out your site, and it's wonderful!!  As you may remember from my dad's email, his father was mayor of Kittaning during the 60's. After my family moved from Kittaning to Baltimore, I remember coming back and spending my summer vacation with my grandma and grandpa, who lived in Hutchinson Court, and how much fun me and my
buddies had playing ball at the playground near the catholic church.. I remember hitting baseballs off the side of the house that my Grandma Crusan lived in! I made many friends each summer, like Ted and Tom Bearer. They had a big red brick house just down the street from the ballyard.  I always wondered what happened to them.

Another fond memory was when me and my brother would catch nightcrawlers in the yard at night with a flashlight, and then the next morning trying not to get killed near the dam while we caught catfish. We'd bring them all up to Mr. Cooper's house, who was probably the only Jewish guy in town, who would buy them off of us. I never could figure out what he did with them!! Maybe he just wanted to make us all feel good.

As my grandpa grew older, he had a job as a dispatcher in the E.O.C., which was  in the cellar of the old courthouse. He'd bring a lawnchair for me and I'd sack out all night while he sat there smoking his old pipe. I'd listen to the tele-typwriter clack out the zone forecasts. It amazed me, and til this day, I'm a weather channel addict!  Well, you have a wonderful site, and I was so happy to hear other folks talk about their past memories in Kittaning.

    The internet is so cool!!!

    Dear Carl,

What a pleasant surprise to find a home page for Kittanning, and such a good one too. I was particularly pleased to see the picture with a view of the bridge and Market Street. I was born in Kittanning in 1941 and lived through my high school years in the Pine Hill area north of West Kittanning. My parents owned McKean Furniture and Floor Covering on North Jefferson Street until they moved in 1960 to Florida. I walked that bridge many many times and swam in the Allegheny every summer.

It is my hope to visit Kittanning again in the near future. Unfortunately, I have lived at great distances (first in Florida and now in Utah) from Pennsylvania and so have not been able to return since I was in law school.  Seeing this home page however has really excited me and rekindled a desire to come back.

Our family name is McKean and I always knew the "McCain" House as the "McKean" House. In fact, I have a recollection that a sign in front of it was spelled "McKean" so it was interesting to see its correct name. The McKean family originated in the Scottish Highlands where the proper pronounciation is with a long a ( as "McKane") and that is the way it was always pronouced in Kittanning. I find in other parts of the country it is pronounced as "McKeen".  Just another reason why I should come back for a visit is it not?

    Thanks for the home page.

    Gary McKean

I think any reason to come back for a visit is a good one, is it not?  Be sure to say hi when you get here, ok?   Carl   :)

All I know is his father's name was Norman Baker and his family came from Kittanning or Craigsville. Norman's dads name was also Norman and he had a brother named Richard ( Bud) Baker and a sister Mary. The Baker family owned a foundry.

I was hoping to find a listing for a paper so I could put in an ad. If you can help me in any way we would really appreciate it.

Our local paper here in Kittanning is the Leader-Times, 115 N. Grant Ave., Kittanning, Pa. 16201. Their phone number is (724) 543-1303.

Another resource will be reopening their doors in April and that is the local Historical and Genealogical Society, phone number (724) 548-5707.

On the recorded message, it states that genealogical questions can be directed to Connie at 814-257-8152. My understanding is that they charge a small fee for research but it goes to a good cause.

     Good luck with your efforts!

     Dear Carl,
Thank you so much for the info. I hope I will be able to find some data on Norman or his relatives for my husband. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

Congratulations on the Kittanning web site, Carl. If you like Kittanning now, you should have seen it in the 1950's when I was a teenager. The downtown was thriving and the river was filled with luxury boats. Thanks for placing the pictures of the Walker and Gavran houses on the site. I knew the Gavran house as the home of Dr.& Mrs. Greenbaum, and their large brood of kids. The swimming pool was always full with neighborhood kids every summer. I understand you are from California. Is that correct? I think it is quite ironic that I left Kittanning for California, and you left California for Kittannning. I hope this web site will create some interest in the old hometown. It is so depressing to see all of the empty storefronts downtown. I've always felt Kittanning had great potential as a destination for tourists, so I hope your website will turn that into a reality. Well, I am glad you like my hometown. I live in San Luis Obispo and it has the feel that Kittanning had when I was a kid. They have done a remarkable job in preserving their downtown. I try to come home for the Folk Festival almost every year, so maybe we will meet sometime. Congratulations again on a fine web site.

I have a mission for you if you choose to accept it.  Some politician or well known businessman in Kittanning has an incredible picture of the Old Kittanning Brick company when it actually "blew up!"  It's an old picture but the story is this guy from Kittanning bought a brand new Model A (I think) and on the hill across the river from where the Brick Company used to be (where KBS is now or  somewhere in there) wanted his picture taken, by incredible coincidence while the shutter was open the Brick company exploded making an incredible picture.  I've never seen it but it's a piece of Kittanning history somebody has preserved and I think a picture on this website would be great...something everybody could see.  I believe whoever has this picture has it hanging in their place of business.  I do not rememeber who told me this story, but a few years ago I had planned to put a Kittanning site together but I got busy with school and such and never came back to Kittanning.

Another picture that I think would be great would be of the Old Stone Bridge out 66 towards New Bethlehem, I know it outside of Kittanning but since it's Armstrong county it has ties to many people from Kittanning.  It's also a great swimming spot.

Also Buttermilk Falls, some pictures from up in there would be a great addition.  Hopefully the place won't be too littered with beer cans.

Just a few ideas.  Keep up the good work, 'til next time.

Anyone with these pictures in hand?  If so, I'd like to borrow them long enough to scan them, or get them handed to me in .jpg format.  I can do fine-tuning here.  Thanks Eric!  Carl

    Carl,

I greatly enjoyed viewing your website on Kittanning. I grew up in Kittanning, lived there for 21 years, and now I'm in Mesa, Arizona. I'm coming home to visit this May (1st visit back in 3 years!) and your website definately made me homesick! Plus it really helped to see good ole Kittanning again! Any pictures you have scanned of Kittanning (mostly the hills/tress/greenery/riverfront), I would love to have them to use as wallpaper on my desktop. Keep up the good work & thanks for your great site!!

I grew up in Kellersburg, went to Penn State, served for 20 years in the USAF as a jet pilot.  Now living in suburban, Kansas City, Missouri. My parents live in a retirement home in New Bethlehem. I've been trying to locate a history about Applewald.  Dated girls there when I attended Kittanning H. S. but never knew the town.  Even played baseball there. Have tried to fax & e-mail the Leader Times with no success.

Am a University Professor & Business Broker here in Metro KC.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Carl

I'm checking out the Kittanning web site to try to track down some information on a grandmother of mine that graduated from Kittanning High School about 1912-1914.  Her name was Effie Means and I would really like to find sources of information about her.  If you have a moment to give me a little steer in the right direction I would appreciate it. My E-mail address is G_R_Wilson@msn.com.  Thank you.

    Hi Carl,

As a former Kittanningite, 1953-1989,  I enjoyed your site very much.  Loved the walking tour.  We take a car tour of Kittanning when ever we get back. Lots of good memories,  BUT    I'll always remember the Gavran House as the Greenbaum House.

We used to live near the old Laurie's Market.  So sad to see it in that condition.  We moved from Kittanning to Sterling Hts, MI., in 1989.  My husband is employed by PPG Industries.

Thanks for the site.  I was surprised.  I want to go stand on Bluff Street and look down over the river.   ahhhhhhh.

Thanks to my friend Susie, I've had a glimpse of the town in which I was born(Kittanning Hosp) then I grew up as a "Hilltopper" for the Ford City citizens.

My last two trips home to Pa have been to visit the Welch Funeral Home, not fun reasons. Bob did chew me out for never having come home for the class reunions.

Perhaps, I will make it home for fun again. I graduated in '64 from FCHS. I now work for a FSB, in the Lien Perfection Dept and had the pleasure of speaking with a tag office in Homer and one of the gals from that office is from Kittanning. We enjoyed an old home week --I mentioned that we would get to school, only to find that our cannon had been painted Red and White and NO ONE got into trouble, she stated that it's not like that anymore.

I now live in Idaho and love to sew - Judy Greer Young just in case any one still remembers me - Nimblethimble@msn.com

    Carl,
I lived in Kittanning from 1957 until 1979. Since then I've been in Ohio, Georgia, and back to Ohio. I've never found anywhere that maintains the feeling of Kittanning. Nowwhere can you find the same tree lined streets, people who know and care about their neighbors, and the sense of community as in Kittanning. I guess that's why I never miss a chance to return.

Keep up the great page. Its nice to see all the old sights, and take note of current events.

    Hi Carl!

I was born in Worthington and went to the YMCA for pre-school and West Hills for kindergarten. I spent a lot of time in Kittaning with my grandparents. I moved to Florida when I was five, so it's nice to know I can always log on and see what is going on in my hometown. Keep up the good work.

    Rachael

Thanks for the encouragement, Rachael. I've heard from many who want to come back to visit or to stay... you too someday?

Thanks for the site!  I am a Ford City Native (I'm in Florida, now) and found
out about the site from my aunt in Idaho.  What a grapevine!  We all
appreciate the view on the front page.  My Dad still lives on Pine Hill, so
when I get home to visit, I get to see it in person.  As a matter of fact, I'm
    feeling kind of homesick, now...

Thanks, Jackie.  Antidote for homesickness = visit!  Carl    :)

    Hello!

My Mom and Dad both grew up in Ford City, and, although I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, the Ford City/Kittanning area is a second home to me, especially since there are a lot of Sanoba and Wintgens relatives still in the area.

I really enjoyed the walking tour of Kittanning! It brought back memories of taking the Heilman bus from Ford City with my cousins when I visited as a kid!  My maternal grandmother, Clara Roudybush Wintgens lived in Kittanning as a young woman and worked at the Steim (sp?) Hotel and the Typewriter works until she married Peter J. Wintgens and moved to Ford City in 1914!  There are still Roudybushes in the area too!

I'd like to say hi to anyone in my family who might be reading this and to anyone out there who might know me!  See you all in Ford City for Heritage Days next month!

Thanks for writing, Kathi.  I'll be there too.  Carl

    Carl,

I love your Kittanning website.  You've done an excellent job of showing what a beautiful town Kittanning is.  I especially enjoyed reading mail from several people whose names I recognized.  I graduated from KHS with Fred Klugh.  I was friends with Jim Bechdel's sister, Eloise.  I know Peter Wilt's sister, Betsy.  I used to know a Rick Charlson from Ford City, he may be Ryna's  brother, and of course my cousin, Jim Vanderlin.  Also, there were several other names which were familiar to me.

My parents, John and Jerry Dermidzakis, still live in Kittanning so I do visit quite often.  My brother, John and his family, live in Ford City.   My sister, Judy and her husband, live in Meadville.  I live in Albion, just west of Erie.  Our  McGann Family reunion is always scheduled for the same weekend as the Folk Festival so that we can visit with relatives and old friends at the same time.

Thanks again for the wonderful cyber visit to my home town.

P.S. You may post my e-mail address.  Maybe I'll hear from some old friends that I've
            been unable to locate on-line.

Sandy, what a great circle of friends and family!!  Hope you hear from LOTS of them!  Carl
