Hey, here we are!
When I came face to face with big-time stress in my life, I realized it wasn't going to go away unless I
learned how to deal with it. I was lucky. Through a lengthy chain of events, I found an organization called Second
Chance in my path with an ongoing free stress support group. From
the leader Nancy Rivera and other members I've learned a few very practical ways to deal with stress and to keep it from disrupting
my life. I've listed some below. What's important I found is.....
all of
them start and stop with me.
My favorite de-stressing
techniques
Positive affirmations - a positive statement of belief that
WILL influence the subconscious mind to accept it as true. My favorite:
"I am growing more comfortable with doing the best I can and taking life
as it comes. All is well." (Thanks, Nancy!)
Exercises:
- When overworked or feeling overwhelmed, write down on a list all the stressful issues in your life that you can think
of.
- Place a checkmark beside the ones you can do something about soon.
- Draw a thin line through all the others and forget them until you feel
better.
Most of those with lines through them will resolve themselves
or will become much less important with the passage of time. (Thanks to
a crisis nurse at local hospital!)
Changing perspective: The 3-day Rule on "Should
I or shouldn't I?": "Consider how important the results will be three days
from now. If it isn't going to make a big difference, forget it!" (Thanks,
Sharon!)
The most simple: An often forgotten basic.......
"BREATHE!" The potential for a bad decision is much greater with an oxygen-deprived
brain!
